These batteries are designed to destroy themselves when triggered, ensuring that sensitive data on devices remains secure and inaccessible. Although their research focus may seem unusual, DARPA recently awarded a $4.7 billion contract to SRI International, a renowned research institute based in Menlo Park, California. The goal of this project is to develop a "transient Battery" — one that can dissolve or disappear completely when activated. Specifically, SRI will be working on an air-based battery system tailored for DARPA’s needs. The reason behind this innovation is the increasing use of advanced technology in the field. Soldiers now rely on high-tech gear such as night-vision goggles, precision laser sights, and portable power generators. In the future, DARPA envisions equipping soldiers with more complex tools like computers and CNC 3D printers, allowing them to create physical solutions on the spot during missions. However, if these devices fall into enemy hands, they could become major security risks. To prevent this, DARPA has been developing the "Vanishing Programmable Resources" (VAPR) technology. This component can be embedded in electronic devices and programmed to disintegrate when no longer needed. According to Alicia Jackson, the program director for VAPR, the battery would maintain long-term performance while remaining dormant until triggered by a command signal or environmental conditions like temperature changes. Once activated, the device becomes completely unusable, effectively erasing all data and rendering the equipment useless to anyone who might try to access it.
