Cool! Motorcycle riding a plane feeling low altitude aircraft
Aircraft and helicopters are expensive and complex to operate, making them inaccessible for many who dream of experiencing flight. However, a new innovation from California-based Aerofex might change that. The company has launched the Aero-X subscription, a futuristic "suspension vehicle" resembling something out of *Star Wars*, priced at $85,000 with an expected delivery in 2017. To secure a spot, customers need to pay a $5,000 deposit.
Though $85,000 is no small sum, early adopters often overlook price when it comes to groundbreaking technology. If the marketing claims hold true, the Aero-X can lift up to 140 kilograms and hover 3.7 meters above the ground while traveling at speeds of up to 72 km/h. This unique design uses large fans to create lift, similar to hovercraft technology, but with a more compact and agile structure.
The concept first emerged in 2012 when Aerofex unveiled a prototype featuring a bicycle-like frame and two large fan units. The commercial version, the Aero-X, is lighter and built with a full carbon fiber chassis weighing just 356 kg. It’s powered by a three-cylinder engine, capable of carrying two passengers and reaching speeds of 72 km/h. The vehicle also supports vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), making it versatile for different environments.
While the idea of a flying motorcycle sounds exciting, there are challenges. Noise levels are a concern, and even though the fuel tank can power the vehicle for 85 minutes, real-world performance may vary. Safety remains a major hurdle, as maintaining stability with such a system is far from simple. Most open-runner devices tend to be unstable, requiring highly skilled operators to control them effectively—similar to piloting a helicopter.
Aerofex claims to have solved these issues through advanced engineering and has patented their design. They describe the Aero-X as “manipulating like riding a motorcycle,†aiming to make it both safe and user-friendly. If successful, the Aero-X could be the first commercially viable personal flying vehicle on the market.
In addition to recreational use, the vehicle is designed for off-road adventures, allowing users to travel across deserts, fields, lakes, and rivers. According to Aerofex, it's classified as an ATV by the FAA, meaning no pilot’s license is required. Beyond leisure, industries like agriculture, law enforcement, and the military have shown interest in its potential applications. With its blend of innovation and practicality, the Aero-X could mark the beginning of a new era in personal transportation.
