Photovoltaic power generation in China is an internationally advanced market with broad prospects
The National Energy Administration recently held a scientific and technological achievements appraisal for the key technologies and demonstration projects of the trough solar thermal collection system developed by Changzhou Longteng Solar Thermal Power Equipment Co., Ltd. The assessment concluded that these technologies have already reached a stage where they can be widely applied in China's concentrated solar power (CSP) projects, showcasing strong commercial potential.
Xu Jianzhong, chairman of the appraisal committee and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized that the technical achievements are at an international advanced level. He recommended accelerating the industrialization of these technologies and promoting their application in demonstration projects to support the broader development of CSP projects across the country.
This project marks a significant breakthrough in China’s integration of trough solar thermal power generation systems with key industrial components, providing both technical and economic feasibility for large-scale solar thermal power plants. It represents a major step forward in the growth of renewable energy in China.
In 2012, Changzhou Longteng Solar independently invested in the construction of the first commercial demonstration project of a trough concentrating heat-collection system in Inner Mongolia. This was the world’s first such project in a high-latitude, high-altitude area characterized by strong winds, sandstorms, and extreme cold. The project successfully passed inspection and certification by engineers from the German Aerospace Center (DLR), making it a crucial milestone for future large-scale solar thermal power stations in central and western China.
Yu Ke, general manager of Changzhou Longteng Solar Thermal Power Equipment Co., Ltd., highlighted that the heat collection field is the core component of a solar thermal power plant, accounting for 40%–50% of the total investment and directly affecting the plant’s output. The successful operation of the demonstration project, along with its testing and appraisal, has confirmed that it meets the performance standards of international commercial power stations. This achievement demonstrates that China’s CSP technology and equipment have made significant progress in domestic production and application, particularly in the central and western regions.
Concentrated solar power (CSP) is a technology that uses a concentrating heat-collecting system to efficiently capture solar thermal energy, which is then converted into electricity using traditional thermoelectric methods. Compared to other renewable energy sources, CSP offers several advantages: it achieves a light-to-heat conversion efficiency exceeding 70%, has strong compatibility with existing power systems such as coal, natural gas, and biomass, and allows for continuous power generation through large-scale thermal storage. The heat storage technology is mature and cost-effective, enabling 24-hour power generation. With established commercial experience and low technical risks, CSP presents a promising path for future energy development.
According to Yu Ke, there is still significant room for cost reduction in CSP. A World Bank report predicts that the long-term cost of CSP electricity could drop to between 6 and 8 cents per kilowatt-hour. Currently, the price of electricity from newly built CSP plants abroad is around 1.2 to 1.5 yuan per degree. Once fully industrialized in China, these costs are expected to decrease even further, making CSP a more competitive and sustainable energy solution.
