Introduction of lipstick culture method
The lipstick plant thrives in a semi-shade environment that is warm and bright. Insufficient light can lead to elongated stems and poor flowering, while excessive light may cause the leaves to turn reddish-brown. For optimal growth, it's best to hang the plant about one meter away from a south-facing window, where it can receive indirect sunlight.
When it comes to potting soil, a slightly acidic mix works best. You can use a combination of peat soil, sand, and vermiculite, along with some superphosphate for added nutrients. Another option is to mix 2 parts coarse sand with 8 parts of humus soil. Alternatively, you can use a mix containing 30% decomposed cow or horse manure mixed with coarse coal ash.
During summer, place the plant under partial shade outdoors, such as under a tree or a shaded area with about 50% light coverage. If you live in an apartment, you can hang the pot beneath the balcony scaffolding and cover it with bamboo curtains for protection. Ensure the plant gets enough light on the sides, especially if placed near a door or window.
Lipstick plants don’t require much fertilizer. A diluted liquid fertilizer made from decomposed animal waste can be applied every two weeks. Adding some livestock horn or bone pieces as a base fertilizer will also help promote healthy growth.
To encourage blooming, you can use a 0.1% solution of potassium dihydrogen phosphate or a 20-fold dilution of fish viscera and bone water. After repotting, keep the soil moist but not soggy. High humidity (around 80%) is ideal, so misting the leaves can help maintain moisture. Avoid placing the plant in areas with strong drafts, as this can cause the stems to bend or droop.
As autumn approaches, gradually reduce watering and fertilizing. In winter, keep the soil slightly dry. Apply a phosphorus-rich fertilizer before the plant starts to flower, but avoid over-fertilizing otherwise. The ideal growing temperature for lipstick plants is between 18°C and 30°C, with the best performance around 25°C. They are sensitive to cold, so during winter, they should be brought indoors where temperatures stay above 12°C.
If the leaves start turning red, it could be due to low temperatures or too much light. Adjust the temperature accordingly. If the room is too cold, the leaves may fall off, and the stems could become dry and brittle. Proper care and attention will ensure your lipstick plant remains healthy and vibrant throughout the seasons.
