Recently, the seawater desalination demonstration system driven by the waste heat of the cylinder liner cooling water of a diesel generator unit jointly built by the Guangzhou Advanced Technology Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology and the South Sea Wind Power Cooperative Development Co., Ltd. in Guishan, Zhuhai, has been successfully commissioned. Water, water quality meets national drinking water hygiene standards. The set of seawater desalination unit is rated at 60 tons of fresh water per day. It is a modular and compact design. Its technology has reached the leading domestic and world advanced level and is of great significance for solving the shortage of freshwater resources in the island.

At present, desalination technologies include thermal methods and membrane methods. Both methods have their own advantages and disadvantages, but they all need to consume large amounts of energy and belong to industries with high energy consumption. To this end, Guangzhou Advanced Technology Institute carried out technological innovations, through the recovery of waste heat from the cooling water of diesel generator sets cylinder liner, and using low-temperature multi-effect distillation technology to desalinate seawater, significantly reducing the energy consumption of seawater desalination. The seawater desalination demonstration system is matched with a 1000kW diesel generator and has a rated water production of 60 tons/day. It has an adaptive function for the actual power generation load change system of the generator set and can operate smoothly within a load range of 30% to 100%. Meet the daily consumption of fresh water for 150-300 people.

In addition, this technology has a wide range of application prospects. For example, it can use low-grade heat energy, including waste heat from diesel generator sets and waste heat from industrial production processes, as a heat source; it is particularly suitable for the abundance of waste heat resources but the scarcity of fresh water resources. The regions and companies, such as the island (with diesel generators), chemical industry, thermal power, steel and other industries as well as large and medium-sized ocean-going vessels, are also suitable for the purification of waste heat from inland industrial production processes.
