Strawberry Summer Management
Irrigation and drought prevention are essential to ensure healthy growth of strawberry seedlings during the summer season. It is important to maintain consistent moisture in the soil by watering regularly. When irrigating, water should be poured up to two-thirds of the furrow depth. The surface of the mulch must not be submerged, and the seedlings should be kept wet but not waterlogged. Watering should be done in the evening to avoid excessive evaporation. In periods of continuous dry weather, it is generally recommended to water the seedlings every 3 to 5 days, depending on the specific conditions of the field.
To protect the seedlings from high temperatures, shading and cooling measures should be implemented. Direct sunlight can cause sunburn on the leaves and runners, increasing the risk of leaf spot and anthracnose diseases. A shade cloth of about 1 meter in height can be placed over the seedling beds, and materials like firewood or straw can be used to cover the top for additional protection. Alternatively, planting tall crops around the area can also help provide natural shade.
During the process of stolon orientation and plant emergence, it's crucial to direct and evenly arrange the runners. Gently pressing the new plants into the soil helps promote root development. When weeding, avoid disturbing the roots of the strawberry plants to prevent damage or death. At the same time, remove yellow and dead leaves to reduce nutrient consumption and water loss, while improving air circulation and light penetration.
If the seedlings appear weak or underdeveloped, a diluted fertilizer solution can be applied. This may include 2% human manure or 0.3% compound fertilizer, applied once every 7 to 10 days. Fertilization should be done in the evening to minimize the risk of burning the plants. Consistent application can help strengthen the seedlings and support their growth.
Pest and disease control is especially important during the summer and autumn seasons. One of the most dangerous pests for strawberries is the cockroach, which can damage the plants and even cause them to die. To manage infestations, the nursery can be treated with solutions such as trichlorfon diluted 800 times or dichlorvos diluted 1000 times. Manual removal of adult cockroaches is also effective. Cockroaches often lay eggs in unfertilized compost piles, so using fully decomposed organic fertilizers can help reduce their population.
