North American Bohler-Uddeholm has introduced a third-generation powder metallurgy tool steel called Vanadis 4 Extra. Compared to the previously used powder metallurgy tool steel, the third generation of powder metallurgy tool steel has obvious advantages: third generation powder The metallurgical tool steel has less non-metallic inclusions, finer carbides and grains, and more uniform structure. Materials with high abrasion resistance are generally poorly ductile, and materials with good ductility are generally poor in wear resistance. Vanadis 4 Extra combines high abrasion resistance and ductility and is suitable for being made into sheet steel. The machining and heat treatment of high-alloyed tool steels is often cumbersome and leads to increased production costs. With carefully selected alloying and powder metallurgy processes, Vanadis 4 Extra has better machinability than AISI D2 tool steels. Vanadis 4 Extra is superior to all known high performance cold work tool steels in terms of dimensional stability after hardening and tempering, which means that Vanadis 4 Extra is a tool steel suitable for surface treatment. The Vanadis 4 Extra extends tool life and reduces maintenance costs. The density of Vanadis 4 Extra powder metallurgy tool steel is 7.7g/cm3. Vanadis 4 Extra is most suitable for processing austenitic stainless steel, low carbon steel, copper and aluminum. The chemical composition (mass fraction) of Vanadis 4 Extra is: 1.4 % C, 0.4% Si, 0.4% Mn, 4.7% Cr, 3.5% Mo, and 3.7% V. Vanadis 4 Extra powder metallurgy tool steel is produced by Bohler-Uddeholm of North America using the SuperClean 3 process developed by Bohler-Uddeholm's Hagfors plant in Sweden.
