High-temperature de-icing of insulated gloves worn by a power supply station in Wuhan
In the heart of Wuhan, as winter's chill gripped the city, the aerial team of the Wuhan Tram Company remained on high alert. With freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall, trams were at risk of being damaged by ice buildup or entangled in branches that fell from trees. These issues could disrupt the smooth operation of the tram system, causing inconvenience to passengers who rely on it for daily travel.
At 2:30 PM, Li Tianlu, Cheng Jinhong, and Xiao Qifeng, line workers from the Wuchang North Road tram supply station, set out on a routine inspection. The reporter accompanied them as they drove along Zhongbei Road and Wujing Road, heading toward the Yangtze River Bridge and Guqin Platform. Throughout their journey, the three workers kept a sharp eye on the overhead lines, scanning for any signs of danger. They couldn’t afford to be distracted—each moment was critical.
As they reached Guqin, Master Li spotted a broken porcelain insulator that had caused the contact wire to shift. If left unattended, this fault could lead to a dangerous situation where the tram might lose contact with the power source. The team quickly stopped the tram and climbed up to the open-air lift platform, which raised them five meters into the air. The small wooden platform, equipped with tools and spare parts, swayed slightly in the wind. Standing there, the reporter felt the biting cold and the strong gusts of wind that made the already chilly air feel even more intense.
Despite the harsh conditions, the workers focused entirely on their task. Master Li explained, “This isn’t the worst we’ve faced. In the north, it’s drier, and snow doesn’t stick as much. But here in Wuhan, it’s cold and wet—ice builds up quickly on the wires, and we have to work hard to keep everything running smoothly. It’s like climbing ants, but we do it every day.â€
Wang Yongge, deputy director of the tram power supply station, added, “In northern China, snow is light and doesn’t accumulate much. They don’t need to remove ice from the tracks. But in Wuhan, with its humid climate, ice on the wires is a unique challenge. We have to be extra careful to ensure the safety of our passengers.â€
The team’s dedication highlights the importance of their role in maintaining the city’s transportation network, especially during severe weather. Their efforts go unnoticed by most, but without them, the trams would not run safely or efficiently. As the snow continues to fall, these workers remain on the front lines, ensuring that Wuhan’s trams keep moving through the winter.
