China Aluminum Industry Network 1. Seal Design The sealing system in unit-type doors and windows plays a critical role in ensuring performance and durability. Key areas of focus include the seal between units, the connection between the unit and the frame, the junction between the frame and the opening, and the interface between units. To enhance sealing effectiveness, two or more rubber strips are typically used in the joint areas between protective frames (as shown in Figure 3). The design of the seal between the frame and the opening must be tailored according to the specific architectural structure. After insulation separation between the lower frame and the opening, waterproof mortar is applied for sealing. Additionally, waterproof silicone is used to seal the gap between the frame and the outer edge of the window opening, ensuring long-term protection against moisture intrusion.

2. Waterproof Design Waterproofing is a key feature of unit-type doors and windows. These systems can employ a dual waterproofing strategy: one being the inherent waterproof design of the door and window unit itself, and the second being an additional layer of waterproofing within the lower frame. In addition to drain holes located on the door and window units, a drain hole is also installed at the junction between the lower frame and the unit body. Under normal conditions, rainwater or condensation that enters the cavity is directly drained through the unit’s drain hole. If water leaks due to poor drainage or tight sealing between the unit and the frame, the second layer of the lower frame ensures that any accumulated water is effectively drained, preventing damage and maintaining performance over time.

3. Energy-Saving Design Both the protective frames and the door and window units utilize broken bridge thermal insulation profiles, which can be either strip-based or injection-molded. The width of the insulation structure can be adjusted based on energy efficiency requirements (see Figure 7). The single-chamber plug-in design allows for the easy installation of elastic insulating materials—such as polystyrene or polyurethane extruded foam—on one side of the unit before connection. This prevents air circulation within the joint cavity, significantly improving energy efficiency compared to conventional windows. Additionally, this design contributes to better sound insulation and noise reduction, making it a highly effective solution for modern buildings.

4. Seismic Design The unique plug-in mounting system of unit-type doors and windows enables them to accommodate structural displacements caused by earthquakes, temperature changes, and inter-story movement. This design offers superior seismic resistance compared to traditional windows and doors, making it ideal for regions with varying earthquake risk levels. By allowing flexibility and absorbing external forces, these systems provide enhanced safety and long-term reliability.
