Double exhibition joint marriage furniture industry or towards innovation

<

In a significant development within China's furniture industry, two major exhibition hubs—Pearl River Delta and Yangtze River Delta—have traditionally dominated the sector. This has led to intense competition between events like the Shanghai and Guangzhou Furniture Fairs. However, recent changes have introduced a new dynamic. In mid-March this year, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Fujian Furniture Fair brought two major updates: first, the Dongguan International Furniture Fair merged with the Shanghai International Furniture Fair; second, starting from September next year, the autumn edition of the Guangzhou Furniture Fair will be relocated to Shanghai, directly competing with the existing "China International Furniture Fair" in the city. This collaboration between exhibitions marks a shift toward shared growth rather than rivalry. On March 17, during the 31st Dongguan Famous Furniture Fair, Wang Mingliang from Shanghai Bohua International Exhibition and Yin Chengzhi from Guangdong Modern Exhibition Management Co. announced a partnership between the Dongguan International Famous Furniture Fair and the China International Furniture Fair. The goal is to create a cross-regional cooperation platform for global furniture exhibitions by sharing resources and promoting each other’s events through advertising, media, and press conferences. Both sides also plan to develop joint promotional strategies that align with their long-term visions, bringing fresh energy to both fairs. Just one day later, on March 18, at the 33rd China (Guangzhou) International Furniture Fair, officials from the China Foreign Trade Center and the Guangdong Furniture Association confirmed that the autumn Guangzhou Furniture Fair, held last month, would move to the Shanghai Hongqiao China Expo Convention and Exhibition Complex, which spans 1.36 million square meters. From now on, the China (Guangzhou) International Furniture Fair will take place in Guangzhou every March, while the China (Shanghai) International Furniture Fair will be held in Shanghai every September. The move was approved by local authorities in Shanghai on the 10th. Industry experts believe this shift—from regional alliances to competitive cooperation—signals a break from traditional rivalries and regional monopolies. It could lead to a more collaborative and prosperous environment for the domestic furniture exhibition industry. As the industry evolves, design innovation is becoming a key focus. According to reports, over 50% of exhibitors at the Guangzhou Furniture Fair, often called the “Asian Home Trading Center” and “Barometer of the Chinese Furniture Industry,” are Guangdong-based companies. With the fair moving to Shanghai, questions arise about its international reputation and whether relocating the event might increase costs for local participants. However, Wang Zhiping, chairman of the China Foreign Trade Center, dismissed these concerns, stating that details will be released soon. Zhou Shanlin, executive vice president of Federal Home Furnishing Group, who has attended the Guangzhou Fair for over a decade, sees the move as beneficial. He believes that holding the event in Guangzhou in March and Shanghai in September will maximize trade opportunities and help build stronger international brands. Liang Haichao, general manager of Guangdong Mingaowan Furniture, added that more Guangdong companies are investing in original designs and advanced manufacturing technologies. By hosting the fair in Shanghai, overseas buyers can experience the creativity and quality of Guangdong’s furniture, helping to change the outdated perception of Chinese furniture as lacking in design.
