The new discharge port effectively prevents the mill from "bloating"
When a ball mill operates stably, the amount of ore entering the mill should be balanced with the amount being discharged. However, due to various factors, the amount of material inside the mill can increase beyond its capacity, leading to gradual accumulation. This condition reduces the grinding efficiency and is referred to as "mill flatness."
There are two primary causes of mill swelling. The first is an excessive feed rate that exceeds the mill’s capacity, while the second occurs when the discharge port becomes blocked, preventing properly ground material from leaving the mill. As a result, the material builds up inside, causing the mill to swell.
When a ball mill swells, both the grinding media (steel balls) and the ore accumulate inside the cylinder, slowing down the rotation speed and putting the motor under heavy load. This can lead to motor damage or reduced lifespan. Additionally, the loss of grinding action may cause larger particle sizes in the output, which affects the quality and fineness of the material for downstream processes. This can disrupt the normal operation of the flotation or separation stages. In severe cases, large chunks of ore and steel balls may be expelled through the inlet or outlet, potentially damaging the mill structure. Therefore, it is crucial to prevent this "swelling" phenomenon during actual operations.
Currently, three main strategies are used to address this issue: installing a crusher before grinding, improving the grinding system to enhance efficiency, and adding a high-efficiency classifier. Among these, pre-grinding is essential, while post-grinding classification ensures better performance. Internal system modifications are considered the most fundamental solution.
Installing a fine crusher before grinding significantly reduces the particle size of the incoming material, thus decreasing the load on the ball mill. This not only improves the efficiency of the classification process but also helps eliminate oversized particles early, reducing the burden on the mill. Internal modifications, such as optimizing the grinding system, are the most effective long-term solutions.
One of the most successful examples in China is the ultra-fine lamination self-grinding machine developed by Yantai Xinhai Mining Machinery Co., Ltd. This equipment features a discharge port located at the lower side of the mill, arranged around the grinding chamber. This design enhances the efficiency of removing qualified products, prevents over-grinding, and achieves a filling rate of up to 45%, effectively preventing the occurrence of "flatness."
