Stair height and width decoration design skills

When it comes to home improvement, safety should always be a top priority. At the same time, economic considerations are equally important. This includes both financial and spatial efficiency. The standard height for a residential staircase is typically between 180mm and 200mm. In public areas, however, the step height is usually lower, ranging from 130mm to 160mm. Another key factor is the tread depth, which refers to the horizontal space of each step. It's commonly designed between 230mm and 250mm, with a minimum of 220mm. If the tread depth is too shallow—like 300mm—it can make climbing stairs tiring and uncomfortable.

Stair Height and Width Decoration Design Tips

The width of the steps in a home staircase is usually around 800mm. This can be adjusted based on the available space in the stairwell. When designing the opening for the stairs, you can consider various configurations. For example, if the step height is 192.86mm, and there are 13 steps, it’s often better to use 14 steps to ensure a smoother transition. The last step leads directly to the second floor, known as the "lower cross" in stair design.

For a 1950mm side length, you can have five standard steps with a 230mm center distance. Then, a 800mm landing (or two large triangles, or two small triangles with a central fish head) can create a 90-degree turn. After that, seven more standard steps with the same 230mm center distance follow. If using two large triangles for the turn, you can then proceed with six steps. If using two small triangles with a central fish head, you can continue with five standard steps.

Designing a staircase isn’t just about measurements—it’s also about comfort, aesthetics, and functionality. Taking the time to plan carefully ensures that your staircase not only looks good but also feels safe and easy to use every day.
