On October 21, 2013, the "Sino-British New Materials Technology Matchmaking Meeting" was successfully held in Chengdu as a supporting event of the "China-EU Innovation and Cooperation Conference." Organized by the Science and Technology Department of Sichuan Province, the UK Science and Innovation Network, the Sichuan Science and Technology Exchange Center, the Chengdu International Technology Transfer Center, and the China-UK Science and Technology Innovation Program Office, the event aimed to enhance international cooperation and scientific innovation between Sichuan and British institutions. Over 80 participants from universities, research institutes, and technology enterprises in both China and the UK attended, including representatives from Cardiff University, Queen Mary University of London, GTW Development Group, Sichuan University, and the University of Electronic Science and Technology. Meng Aiguo, Deputy Inspector of the Provincial Science and Technology Department, provided an overview of Sichuan’s new materials industry, highlighting its rapid growth and the formation of six key sectors: vanadium-titanium materials, silicon-lithium materials, chemical materials, rare earth materials, superhard materials, and biomedical materials. Ms. Chai Manyi from the China-UK Science and Technology Innovation Program shared insights into the UK’s advancements in new materials and expressed hope for long-term, mutually beneficial collaboration between the two regions. During the event, experts from 12 institutions, including Professor Robert Hill from Queen Mary University of London, Dr. Lars Beex from Cardiff University, Mr. Graham Waters from GTW Development Group, and Professors Gu Zhongwei and Chen Zexiang from Sichuan University and the University of Electronic Science and Technology, presented their latest projects. Topics covered a wide range of areas, such as bio-materials, electro-optical materials, semiconductors, nanomaterials, and fiber-optic communications. Following the presentations, one-on-one project matching sessions took place, allowing for deeper discussions and potential collaborations. Notably, Cranfield University introduced advanced lithium battery and transparent silver material lamination technologies, while Smart Fabric Inks showcased innovative fabric printing techniques that generated significant interest. Additionally, Portsmouth University and Xihua University reached preliminary agreements on future cooperative research. The meeting was highly successful, fostering meaningful exchanges and laying the groundwork for future partnerships between Sichuan and the UK in the field of new materials. It marked an important step forward in strengthening Sino-British scientific and technological cooperation.
