How to use boron fertilizer
Boron plays a crucial role in the transport and metabolism of carbohydrates within plants. It supports the growth of plant meristems, enhances the development of vegetative and living tissues, accelerates early maturation, improves overall quality, and strengthens the plant's resistance to environmental stress. As an essential nutrient, boron is vital for healthy plant growth.
In crops like rapeseed, a deficiency in boron can lead to the condition known as "flowering without fruiting," where flowers appear but do not develop into seeds. In celery, boron deficiency often causes "cracking stem disease," which affects the structural integrity of the plant. Similarly, grapevines suffering from boron deficiency may produce fruits of uneven size and exhibit browning in radishes.
Boron fertilizer is commonly available in the form of borax, also known as sodium tetraborate. It contains approximately 11% boron and appears as white, translucent, fusiform or glassy crystals. It has no distinct odor and a slightly salty taste. When exposed to dry air, it gradually weathers and dissolves in water. The saturated aqueous solution of borax is alkaline in nature.
For application, borax can be used as a base fertilizer at a rate of 7.5 to 10 kg per hectare. For seed soaking, a concentration of 0.02% to 0.05% is typically recommended, with seeds soaked for 4 to 6 hours before drying and sowing. For foliar application, a 0.1% to 0.2% borax solution is sprayed 2 to 3 times during the growing season to ensure adequate uptake by the plant.
Proper boron management is essential for maintaining high crop yields and quality, especially in soils that are naturally low in this important micronutrient. Farmers should monitor their soil conditions regularly and apply boron fertilizers according to specific crop needs and local agricultural guidelines.
