Rice orchid maintenance skills

Milan, also known as the "tree orchid," is an evergreen shrub with a dense, multi-branched structure that forms a round and attractive shape. This plant blooms for a long period, typically from June to October, and its flowers remain open for an extended time. Milan is valued not only for its beauty but also for its wood, which is suitable for carving and furniture making. It has six distinct characteristics or needs that must be met for successful cultivation. 1. Milan prefers acidic soil and should avoid alkaline conditions. 2. It thrives in warm and humid environments, avoiding cold and dry climates. 3. It requires plenty of sunlight but should not be exposed to direct, harsh midday sun. 4. It benefits from light fertilization rather than heavy applications. 5. It likes moist conditions but dislikes overly wet soil. In northern regions, where winters are cold, Milan cannot survive outdoors and must be grown in pots. Many northern gardeners grow Milan mainly for its fragrance, and if it does bloom, the flowers are often considered inferior in quality. To encourage more abundant and fragrant blooms, proper care is essential: 1. Sunlight plays a crucial role in the development of Milan’s fragrance. When placed in a sunny spot (around 30 degrees), the leaves become thick and dark green, the branches grow strong, and the number of flowers increases. The color becomes bright yellow, and the scent becomes stronger. Whether on a balcony or in a yard, make sure the plant receives adequate sunlight. Insufficient light can lead to stunted growth, fewer flowers, and a weaker aroma. During midsummer, it's best to provide some shade during the hottest part of the day. Avoid placing it on a north-facing balcony, as it may not receive enough light for healthy growth. 2. To enhance the fragrance, apply more phosphorus and potassium-based fertilizers. Since Milan blooms multiple times a year, it consumes a lot of nutrients. Fertilizing in a timely and appropriate manner helps maintain its health. However, it's best to spray the fertilizer after 6 PM to avoid burning the leaves. 3. As a southern plant, Milan prefers a humid environment. The dry air in the north can hinder its growth. During the growing season, misting the leaves several times a day can help meet its humidity needs. The potting soil should be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. If the soil is too dry, the leaves may turn yellow and buds may dry out. Overwatering, on the other hand, can lead to root rot, which can cause leaf loss and even death. 4. If keeping Milan on a balcony, ensure good air circulation. Poor ventilation can lead to pest infestations and cause the plant to drop leaves, buds, and flowers. 5. Milan thrives in acidic soil. Alkaline soil can prevent it from growing properly, leading to poor health or even death. In northern areas, tap water is often alkaline, so it's important to adjust the pH of the water used for irrigation. Aim to keep the water pH below 6.5 to create a more favorable growing environment for Milan.
