How do green radishes encounter pests and diseases?
When the fleshy roots of radishes enter the expansion phase, the early growth leaves begin to age. These older leaves often stick to the soil and may turn yellow or even rot. As soon as yellowing is observed on the radish plants, it's important to remove them promptly. The **Pesticide Network** shares some practical prevention tips to help you manage common issues:
1. **Double Mildew**: If you notice yellow-brown spots on the leaves, your radishes may be infected with double mildew. To control this, you can spray the affected plants with a 500-fold dilution of metalaxyl pesticide once a week, or up to two to three times for better prevention.
2. **Cabbage Caterpillar**: If cabbage caterpillars are present, the **pesticide manufacturer** recommends using a 500-800-fold solution of *Bacillus thuringiensis* for spraying. This should be done once a week, typically requiring two to three applications to achieve effective control.
3. **Root Cracking**: During the root enlargement stage, cracking in the fleshy roots can occur. This is mainly due to inconsistent watering. If there’s high temperature and drought in the early stages, followed by sudden water availability later, the outer layer of the root may not expand at the same rate as the inner cells, leading to cracks. These cracks can be longitudinal, transverse, or radial. Cracked roots reduce yield, lower quality, and make the radishes more prone to rotting. To prevent this, maintain consistent moisture levels in the soil without overwatering or letting it dry out completely.
4. **Root Galling (Roots)**: In the late growth stage, radishes may develop swollen lateral roots, known as "roots." This occurs when the main root’s growth is interrupted, causing the lateral roots to grow abnormally. It can happen due to compacted soil, stones, or improper fertilization. To avoid this, prepare the planting area thoroughly by deep plowing, removing stones, and ensuring well-decomposed organic fertilizer is used.
5. **Heart Rot**: Another issue affecting radish quality is heart rot, which is caused by water imbalance. During the root expansion phase, if the plant experiences excessive heat and insufficient water, some parenchyma cells may become dehydrated. To prevent this, water the radishes every three days during dry periods, which helps maintain proper moisture and prevents internal decay.
In addition to regular watering, it's essential to fertilize radishes once a week during the root expansion period. A mix of diammonium phosphate and urea in a 1:1 ratio, at a rate of 20 kg per mu, is recommended. Fertilizer application can be combined with irrigation for better absorption.
As autumn and winter approach, radishes will reach full maturity. The **Chinese Pesticide Network** advises farmers to water radishes every 3–5 days before harvest to increase their moisture content. The goal is to ensure the top 30 cm of soil is moist, allowing the radish roots to reach about 80% water content for optimal freshness and quality.
