An industry insider with over seven years of experience in Nanjing’s countertop sector shared that many small businesses take advantage of this by using substandard or even fake materials to cut costs. “When signing a contract, they show you a branded countertop, but what you get at home might be something entirely different,†he explained. This practice, known as “running orders†within the industry, is common among smaller retailers, with about 60% engaging in such behavior.
One reason for this issue is that most countertops come with a generic barcode or stamp and lack a specific brand name. Even if the contract mentions a particular brand, it's easy for merchants to substitute the product during delivery. This has become an open secret in the cabinet industry, invisible to the average consumer but well-known to insiders. There are three main ways in which countertops are "tuned" or altered: using calcium powder boards to mimic pure resin countertops, substituting acrylic countertops without actual acrylic content, and replacing real quartz stone with cheaper glass-based alternatives. These fake quartz stones lack the durability and resistance of genuine ones, making them less reliable in the long run.
To avoid falling victim to these practices, the insider advised consumers to be cautious and not be tempted by low prices. He noted that genuine resin countertops typically cost between 500-600 yuan per square meter, while composite acrylic ranges from 700-800 yuan, and quartz stone can go up to 1,000 yuan. A significant price difference should raise red flags.
Another crucial step is to request a warranty card when signing the contract. High-end brands like Celite, LG, DuPont, and Baoguanglong usually provide detailed warranty cards that include brand information, origin, model, color, and warranty period. These documents ensure that if any issues arise, customers can contact the manufacturer directly for support. If a merchant refuses to provide a warranty card, consumers can still verify the authenticity by contacting the manufacturer. Many countertop companies keep records of orders, and consumers can call to confirm the details. Being informed and proactive is the best way to protect your investment.
