Home improvement market, beware of cabinet countertops
In the world of kitchen cabinets, the countertop is often the most vulnerable part when it comes to quality control. An industry insider with over seven years of experience in Nanjing shared that the countertop section is where many unscrupulous businesses try to cut corners. He explained that while some small companies avoid using substandard materials, others even use fake countertops to mislead customers during the package deal. To protect themselves, he strongly advises consumers to request a warranty card for the countertop when signing a contract.
"Explosive countertops are easy to be 'tuned'" — this phrase refers to the common practice of replacing genuine materials with cheaper alternatives after the sale. The insider revealed that 60% of small businesses engage in such practices, known within the industry as "running orders." Customers often don't realize they've been deceived until the product arrives at home.
Why does this happen? According to the insider, most countertops come with generic barcodes or stamps without specific brand names. This makes it easy for merchants to switch the actual material upon delivery. It's an open secret in the cabinet industry, and only those who understand the process can spot the differences.
There are three main ways countertops get "adjusted." First, calcium powder boards are used to mimic pure resin countertops. Second, acrylic countertops may not actually contain any acrylic. Third, fake quartz stone is substituted for real quartz. Real quartz countertops are made from natural quartz ore and are expensive, but fake versions are made from glass, which lacks durability and resistance to scratches.
To avoid falling victim to these tactics, the insider suggests two key strategies. First, don’t go for the cheapest option. Pure resin countertops typically cost between 500–600 yuan per square meter, while composite acrylic ranges from 700–800 yuan, and quartz stone starts at around 1,000 yuan. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
The second and equally important step is to ask for a warranty card when signing the contract. High-end brands like Celite, LG, DuPont, and Baoguanglong provide detailed warranty cards that include brand, origin, model, color, usage instructions, and warranty period. These cards ensure that if any issues arise, customers can directly contact the manufacturer for service.
If a merchant refuses to provide a warranty card, consumers can still verify the authenticity by contacting the manufacturer. Many reputable countertop companies keep records of their orders, and customers can call to confirm whether the product was indeed ordered. This simple step can save a lot of trouble down the line.
