The output value of the machine tool industry declines and the foundry suffers
Abstract Machine tools are made up of a variety of components, both large and small, many of which are produced through casting. According to data from Jinmo.com, the machine tool industry has faced a significant downturn since last year. Companies have experienced a sharp drop in orders, and the decline in output value has become widespread across the sector. These challenges not only affect machine tool manufacturers but also have a ripple effect on related industries, such as foundries that supply casting parts.
The machine tool industry saw a major profit decline in 2012. Major domestic machine tool companies reported an average drop of around 30% in output value. Even large enterprises like Shenyang Machine Tool and Kunming Machine Tool were not immune to this downturn. The impact was especially severe during the winter of 2012, when key machine tool producers saw their output values fall significantly.
According to official statistics, from January to October 2012, as demand for machine tools dropped sharply, the total industrial output of key enterprises fell by 18.1% year-on-year. The output value of gold-cutting machine tools declined by 19.1%, while production volume dropped by 29.7%. Similarly, the output value of general-purpose machine tools fell by 18.2%, with production down by 27.5%. For rolling functional components and numerical control systems, the declines were even more severe—35% and 35.8%, respectively.
With the overall decline in machine tool output and fewer orders coming in, foundry companies that once relied heavily on casting parts for machine tools have seen a noticeable reduction in their order volumes. This has created additional pressure on the entire supply chain, highlighting the interconnected nature of the manufacturing ecosystem. As the industry continues to face headwinds, it is clear that recovery will require coordinated efforts across all levels of production.
