The latest ten national stone standards are introduced
In recent developments, the National Stone Standardization Technical Committee has introduced ten new national standards, including "Natural Stone Test Method," "Natural Stone Terminology," "Measurement Method for Mirror Gloss of Architectural Finishing Materials," "National Stone Uniform Number," "Natural Plate," "Natural Granite Building Plates," "Natural Sandstone Building Plates," "Natural Limestone Building Plates," "Natural Stone Countertops for Toilets," and "Adhesives for Finished Stones." These updates aim to enhance industry efficiency by promoting standardized panels, standardizing terminology, raising technical requirements for wool board products, adopting advanced international standards for physical and chemical properties, and improving detection methods. Industry experts believe that these new standards will significantly accelerate the internationalization of China's stone industry.
As China's economy continues to grow and living standards improve, natural stone has become a popular choice for high-end interior and exterior decoration. Its unique aesthetic appeal aligns with people's desire to connect with nature and build a harmonious society. This trend has led to increased demand from both construction projects and households, contributing to the rapid growth of the stone industry. Today, China is one of the world's leading countries in stone production, consumption, and trade, with the highest annual output and import-export volumes globally.
Despite being a major resource and consumer country, China still lags behind leaders like Italy in terms of mining technology, processing capabilities, and product quality. The price of Chinese stone products is only about 1/4 to 1/5 of the global average, which has led to repeated anti-dumping investigations. As the industry becomes more international, standardization is increasingly aligned with global practices. Many countries now recognize Chinese stone standards, and some large domestic projects and exports must comply with American ASTM or European EN standards. Some unique Chinese standards have even become the foundation for international trade.
To support the industry’s expansion and global integration, the National Stone Standardization Technical Committee (SAC/TC460) was established in 2008 under the approval of the National Standardization Management Committee. It consists of three subcommittees focused on technical standards, management specifications, and product auxiliary materials. This comprehensive structure marks a significant step toward systematic and standardized stone standardization.
In 2009, the committee developed a framework for industry standards and a quality development system, initiating comprehensive standardization efforts. The immediate task was to supplement and improve critical standards to build a more complete system. In the medium to long term, the focus will be on absorbing advanced foreign standards, enhancing the existing framework, and promoting technological progress, energy efficiency, environmental protection, and sustainable practices. Research on stone standards and related regulations will be strengthened, along with international cooperation to align Chinese standards with global ones and contribute to international stone standardization efforts.
