The study of supercapacitor electrode materials has been focused on nanocrystalline materials. However, the nature of the nanocrystalline materials is difficult to expand or shrink, which limits the cycle life and rapid charge-discharge performance of supercapacitors. At the same time, the synthesis of nanocrystalline materials is usually carried out at high temperatures, which greatly increases the production costs, and the process is complicated, and it is difficult to achieve mass production, which greatly limits the widespread promotion of supercapacitors. In recent years, researchers have begun to try to use amorphous materials for electrode materials for supercapacitors. Compared to crystalline materials, amorphous materials have lower synthesis temperatures, which greatly reduces the cost of electrode material synthesis. The amorphous material structure is also more stable and its volume can be controlled. However, the fly in the ointment is that the poor conductivity of the amorphous material and the small specific surface area limit the performance of the supercapacitor to a certain extent. Therefore, the development of new amorphous materials with low cost, mass production, high cycle life, and rapid charge/discharge is a core scientific issue in the field of new energy storage, and it is also a problem of industrial supercapacitor production in the world.

Professor Liu Jiaqi and Tutor Xia Hui have successfully synthesized amorphous FeOOH/graphene composite nanosheets. The synthesis method is green and simple.
