Scientists Successfully Transformed Genetically Modified Cyanobacteria to Energy or Alternative Ethanol

Researchers showcase breakthrough in fuel production using cyanobacteria

A microscopic view of blue algae. Cyanobacteria, often referred to as blue-green algae, are a type of prokaryotic organism that plays a crucial role in the ecosystem.

In a recent breakthrough, scientists from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology have successfully produced butanol using genetically modified cyanobacteria. This process utilizes sunlight, carbon dioxide, and the natural metabolic pathways of the bacteria to generate a biofuel that can power vehicles.

Butanol is gaining attention as a promising alternative to traditional fuels. It is not only abundant in raw materials but also renewable, with a significantly higher yield potential compared to ethanol derived from corn or sugarcane—up to 20 times more efficient.

The research team engineered the cyanobacteria by integrating specific genes into their genome, enabling them to produce and secrete butanol rather than relying on their usual metabolic functions. This innovative approach allows for better control over the production process.

According to Paul Hudson, the lead researcher, the environment surrounding the cyanobacteria can be adjusted to regulate butanol output. This means that the fuel can be produced at specific times of the day, making it more adaptable to industrial needs. However, experts believe it may take around a decade before this technology becomes commercially viable.

Hudson emphasized the significance of this discovery, stating that it represents a completely different method from current biofuel production techniques. He expressed optimism about the future of biofuels derived from cyanobacteria.

A prominent Swedish biotech researcher highlighted that genetic engineering of microorganisms is still an emerging field. The potential to harness sunlight and carbon dioxide to create affordable energy could revolutionize the way we think about sustainable power sources.
