In the corn seedling stage, especially in the 4-6 leaf stage, the leaves are often red or purple, which is more common in the fields of Chinese cabbage or sugar beet. There are many reasons for the occurrence of purple seedlings in corn. In addition to physiological factors, the main reasons are:

    First, the soil is deficient in phosphorus. Due to insufficient phosphorus, the metabolism of corn carbohydrates is destroyed because the sugar accumulated in the leaves is excessive, forming anthocyanins, which causes the leaves to become purple.

    Second, the soil is poor in ventilation and water permeability. Due to the low terrain, the stagnant water is blocked by the sputum or the ground, which leads to the poor development of the corn roots, which causes the corn seedlings to become red or purple. Purple seedlings appear on the low temperature, sticky, knotted and poorly drained plots.

    The third is low temperature. After the emergence of corn, if it encounters low temperature, it will often turn the corn leaves red or purple.

Among the above three reasons, regardless of which cause purple seedlings, corn root development is poor, growth potential is not strong, stems and leaves are small, affecting yield.
