Metal halide lamps are filled with a small amount of metal halides and inert gases. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs, they do not have a filament. Instead, they rely on two electrodes to produce light. The process of lighting up takes more than a minute and can be divided into three main stages. First, the ignition phase: Since there's no filament, the lamp cannot start just by applying the working voltage. A high-voltage trigger is required to ionize the gas inside the lamp. This initial spark helps create a conductive path between the two electrodes. Next comes the starting phase. Once the gas is ionized, the discharge voltage begins to heat the electrodes. This causes a glow discharge, which prepares the lamp for the next stage. Finally, the normal illumination phase. As the temperature rises, the glow discharge transitions into an arc discharge. This is when the lamp reaches full brightness. The entire process can take over a minute, but if the starting current is strong enough, the time can be reduced. These lamps are commonly used in areas that require bright, efficient lighting, such as sports stadiums, warehouses, and outdoor areas.
