One: Check the stability of the sofa frame

A quality sofa should be built with solid wooden frames and reinforced with panels on the sides. You can lift the sofa to test its weight—sofas made from particleboard or plywood tend to feel lighter, while solid wood frames are heavier. Gently push and pull the sofa from side to side to check for any wobbling or looseness. A sturdy frame will remain firm and stable.

Two: Inspect the internal craftsmanship

Whether it's a leather or fabric sofa, most models have zippers on the bottom that allow access to the inner structure. Pull back a corner of the fabric cover and look inside. If the materials are free from rust, insects, scars, or bark, and if the joints are glued rather than nailed, it’s a sign of good quality. High-end sofas often use hardwood and advanced joinery techniques for durability.

Three: Examine the leather

For leather sofas, the surface quality is crucial. There are two main types: full-grain and semi-aniline. When shopping, look for a smooth, rich texture without blemishes or cracks. Gently pinch the leather and observe how it stretches—it should be flexible yet strong. After sitting, any wrinkles should disappear quickly, indicating high-quality leather.

For fabric sofas, pay attention to the construction of the seat and back covers. Premium models usually have a cotton lining and removable, washable parts in high-wear areas. The fabric should be thick, with a weight of at least 300 g/m², and able to withstand over 12,000 cycles of use. High-end imported fabrics may also offer anti-static, flame-resistant, and tear-resistant properties. Look for even weave, no loose threads, and a tight, uniform texture.

Four: Evaluate the foam cushioning

Foam is a key component of comfort. It comes in different densities and elasticity levels. Medium-elastic foam is typically used for the backrests and armrests, while high-elastic and ultra-soft foam is ideal for the seat area. High-quality sofas use foam with a density of at least 30 kg/m³ for the seat cushions and 25 kg/m³ or higher for the backrests. To test, sit down and see if the cushion compresses about 10 cm. A comfortable, well-made sofa will support you without sagging.
