Understand the Wood

Furniture maintenance should match the nature of the wood itself. In summer, when humidity is high and rain is frequent, it's best to place your furniture near a window to keep it dry and prevent damage from moisture. In winter, especially in northern areas where heating systems are common, avoid placing furniture too close to heat sources. Excessive temperature can cause wood to shrink and crack, which may ruin the surface and structure of your furniture.

Many types of furniture are also sensitive to air flow. For instance, tables and cabinets with exposed surfaces can suffer from "dry shrinkage and swelling" if left in direct drafts for long periods. This can lead to warping or cracking over time.

Take Care of the Case

A case, often referred to as a shelf, is typically long, thick, and heavy. Its construction is usually not fully integrated with the legs, making it detachable. In the north, this type of furniture is known as “a piece of jade,” while in the south, it’s called “stalk plate.” It was popular during the late Qing Dynasty and was commonly used to display heavy items like self-timers or miniature bonsai.

Because the weight on the top of the case is significant, the middle part is left unsupported. Over time, this can lead to structural issues. To prevent collapse, it's recommended to rotate the case every other year or so. This helps distribute pressure evenly and restore any slight warping caused by constant stress.

Protect Southern Furniture from Moisture

In southern regions, where the climate is more humid, furniture is often coated with a thin layer of lacquer to protect against moisture. Suzhou-style furniture, for example, is lacquered both inside and out, providing full protection. Guangzhou-style furniture is typically treated with a protective paint coat. While painting is not something most people can do themselves, it's best to seek professional help.

In contrast, Beijing-made hardwood furniture is usually not painted but instead receives a layer of wax. The dry northern climate makes painting unnecessary. As the wax is worn down through regular use, it seeps into the wood and oxidizes, forming a smooth, polished surface. Once this patina is formed, it should not be exposed to boiling water or solvents like gasoline, as they can damage the finish.

Maintaining Your Desktop

There's an old saying: “A cold table can't hold hot tea.” This advice reflects the need to respect the wood's environment. For example, stone-top furniture such as tables or screens should never be placed outside in winter or in direct sunlight in summer, as sudden temperature changes can cause cracks.

To clean oil stains on the desktop, you can use alcohol. If you don’t have alcohol, high-proof spirits can work as an alternative. This method is commonly used by older Beijing residents to keep their furniture looking fresh and well-maintained.
