What kind of fabric sunscreen better?
The sun is still blazing, and protecting yourself from its harmful rays remains a major concern. With so many sunscreen clothing options available on the market, consumers often find themselves confused: How effective are these products really? Are they truly better than regular clothes? Rumors online suggest that some sun-protective garments offer superior protection, but how can we know for sure?
To uncover the truth, I decided to conduct my own investigation.
**Step One: Experimental Sampling**
I started by searching for sun protection clothing on Taobao. The results were overwhelming—over 220,000 items appeared. Prices ranged from just a few dollars to higher amounts. I purchased a "Junjun" brand UV-protective shirt, labeled as "quality tested," with monthly sales of over 130,000 units. It was priced at 24 yuan. I also bought a similar piece from a small market in Hangzhou for 40 yuan.
Next, I visited several fashion and outdoor brands, where the prices of "sun-protective" clothing were significantly higher—ranging from 200 to 600 yuan. At a store of "NORTH FACE," I found a gray T-shirt labeled "UPF 50" for 228 yuan. As a control, I also bought a plain black and white cotton T-shirt to represent ordinary clothing. All samples were sent to the Zhejiang Textile Testing and Research Institute for evaluation.
**Step Two: The Testing Process**
First, all five garments were placed in a controlled environment at 20°C and 65% humidity for 24 hours. According to Yan Gong from the Textile Industry Technical Inspection Department, this step ensures accuracy by eliminating environmental variables that could affect the test results.
Then, nine samples were cut from each garment—front, back, and sleeves—to meet strict sampling standards. Each sample had to be randomly selected and meet national requirements to ensure reliability.
Finally, the samples were tested using a UV tester. Experts explained that ultraviolet radiation is divided into three bands. UVA rays (320–420 nm) are particularly damaging, as they penetrate deep into the skin, breaking down collagen and causing tanning. Therefore, the primary focus of the test was on the UVA protection level.
**Step Three: Test Results**
After testing, the results were surprising. The UV protection performance of the plain black and white T-shirts was actually better than the so-called "sun-protective" clothing I had purchased online and from the market. In fact, the standard T-shirts outperformed them in terms of UV blocking.
Even the branded "NORTH FACE" shirt, which claimed a UPF of 50, only tested at 41, falling short of its advertised rating. Meanwhile, the two plain T-shirts had a UPF value of 50+, far exceeding the other samples.
According to GB/T 18830-2009, only textiles with a UPF greater than 40 and UVA transmittance below 5% can be labeled as "UV protection products." While the "NORTH FACE" shirt technically met the standard, its actual performance raised questions about whether it was being exaggerated.
**Conclusion**
This experiment shows that not all sun-protective clothing lives up to its claims. In many cases, regular clothing offers better UV protection. Consumers should be cautious when purchasing sun-protective garments and look for verified certifications rather than relying solely on marketing claims.
