Organic agriculture benefits society
Dongxindian Town in Qingyun County, Shandong Province, stands as a model of modern agriculture, driven by the principle of "Science and Technology Enriches Farmers." Under this initiative, the town actively collaborates with provincial, municipal, and county-level scientific research institutions to promote the application of straw bioreactor technology. To date, the area dedicated to high-quality vegetable cultivation has reached 4,500 acres, with over 4,000 mu utilizing this innovative technology.
The impact of this scientific advancement has been remarkable. It has significantly boosted farmers' incomes and inspired greater enthusiasm among them to learn and apply science in their daily farming activities. At the vegetable production base in Da Li Village, the scene is lively: villagers are busy loading food and moving goods along the roads, while inside the greenhouses, others are watering and fertilizing crops. "It's all because of the Party's good policies," said one villager. "With this straw reactor technology, our greenhouse produce sells at a good price. I can even afford to find my son a daughter-in-law next year."
Before adopting this technology, the villagers only grew green peppers, typically harvesting one or two seasons per year, which barely brought in enough income. Now, they grow a wide variety of vegetables—cucumbers, eggplants, tomatoes, leeks, and watermelons. Even melons can be planted in three seasons a year, and earning 4 to 5 million yuan annually is no longer a dream, according to Wang Xian, a local farmer.
The straw bioreactor technology operates on the principles of plant starvation and biological control. It transforms straw into carbon dioxide, heat, disease-resistant substances, organic matter, and essential minerals for crops. This not only increases soil organic content but also improves and optimizes the ecological environment within greenhouses.
The technology offers four main benefits: first, it accelerates the recycling of crop straw, reduces environmental pollution, and supports sustainable development. Second, it achieves "two reductions and three increases" — reducing the use of pesticides and fertilizers, thereby lowering planting costs, while increasing yield, quality, and profit. Third, it releases carbon dioxide as a natural fertilizer and generates heat during fermentation, which helps raise greenhouse temperatures and prevent frost damage. Fourth, it enhances the soil environment, promotes crop growth, and suppresses diseases.
As a result, high-yield and high-quality agricultural products, including green and organic vegetables, can be produced efficiently. With the widespread adoption of this biotechnology, the town has now established over 150 greenhouses across villages such as Da Li, Li Zhuangyu, Shi Gao, and Nan Zhao, covering more than 4,000 mu. One-third of these greenhouses are used for growing fruits like watermelons and cantaloupes, while the remaining two-thirds focus on vegetables such as peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, and tomatoes.
This transformation has helped farmers achieve rapid wealth accumulation, with annual incomes rising by 30,000 to 40,000 yuan. It has also accelerated the process of modern agriculture in the region, making Dongxindian a shining example of how science and technology can drive rural development.
