I’m often asked by clients who are considering updating or renovating their kitchen, "What are the latest trends?" and "What should I include in my project to ensure it remains relevant and stylish for years to come?" Most people don’t want their kitchen to feel overly trendy since it's such a significant investment, but they still want to incorporate the latest features and styles that will keep their space looking fresh and modern for the long haul—especially if they’re planning to sell down the road. For 2016 and likely for the next few years ahead, white kitchens—whether classic or contemporary—are set to remain at the forefront of kitchen design trends. Gray tones continue to serve as a complementary counterpoint in many designs. Quartz countertops and hardwood floors are still top choices due to their ease of maintenance and durability. Appliances are becoming smarter every year, helping even the most inexperienced cooks achieve professional-level results. However, there are some trends and features that I believe will become increasingly essential and standard in the custom kitchen market. Incorporating a few of these trends for 2017 can help you create a kitchen that feels timeless yet practical today. Graphic Tile This trend originates from Europe and was showcased at the recent EuroCucina kitchen exhibition. We’ve been seeing examples of this in our showroom for several years now. Tile today goes far beyond basic subway or Carrera marble. Modern porcelain tiles allow designers to create striking floor or wall patterns that blend seamlessly with both traditional and contemporary aesthetics. These tiles aren’t just durable—they’re visually stunning. Inspired by vintage hand-painted tiles, they can add a touch of elegance to an otherwise ordinary kitchen. To incorporate them effectively, use them as accents on the backsplash or as a rug-like design under a table or island. If you're concerned about color, opt for muted tones like beige or gray while maintaining bold patterns. These geometric shapes are here to stay as a complement to sleek white and gray kitchens. Although the patterns hail from the past, their appeal is distinctly modern. Induction Tops While induction cooktop technology has been around for decades, it’s only recently gained widespread popularity. Why? Because induction cooktops offer numerous advantages with virtually no downsides. The surface of an induction cooktop stays cool to the touch, preventing your kitchen from overheating and adding an extra layer of safety. They match or surpass gas cooktops in terms of precision and responsiveness when controlling temperature, allowing you to maintain low heat levels for extended periods. In terms of speed, you can bring water to a boil in about 90 seconds. Induction cooktops are highly energy-efficient, and their smooth surfaces are easy to clean, with many models lacking knobs or buttons. The only requirement is using magnetic-based cookware like cast iron or magnetic stainless steel—but high-end cookware typically meets this standard. Electric cooktops are nearing obsolescence, and while gas cooktops have their loyal followers, you owe it to yourself to test an induction model before finalizing your 2017 kitchen renovation. Pet Spaces While this isn't exactly a new trend, it’s a necessity for any kitchen in 2017. We all adore our furry companions—they’re part of the family. Since the kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, it makes sense to integrate your pet’s needs into your kitchen plans. A recent survey conducted by members of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) revealed that over 35% of designers are now including pet-friendly features in their clients’ kitchens. Veterinarians even recommend raising larger dogs' food and water bowls off the floor to aid digestion and make eating more comfortable. We’ve designed many kitchens recently featuring retractable food and water bowls that disappear into the toe kick when not in use. From a simple drawer for storing leashes, toys, and food to more elaborate built-in solutions like pet beds or feeding stations, accommodating your pet’s needs in the kitchen is always on-trend, regardless of the style or year. Docking/Charging Stations It’s a reality of modern life: we’re all connected and rely heavily on our smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Given how much time we spend in the kitchen, it only makes sense to accommodate these devices in a functional and stylish way. As technology advances, docking and charging solutions will only become more prevalent. Today, we’re seeing drawers equipped with built-in USB and electrical outlets, along with pop-up units that keep your devices organized and powered. LG has even introduced a feature that allows any area of their quartz countertops to become conductive, enabling wireless charging simply by placing your device on the designated spot. Planning for future connectivity in your kitchen design is crucial, as these smart devices will undoubtedly remain integral parts of our lives. Beverage Centers With the growing trend of hosting gatherings at home and the enduring popularity of cooking shows, the kitchen has become the social hub for many households. Great food naturally calls for great drinks, and the emergence of beverage centers as a must-have feature reflects this shift. Whether you can dedicate an entire wall or just a small niche to this area, this growing trend enhances convenience and enjoyment for everyone involved. Beverage centers keep guests, kids, and family members out of the main cooking zone during events and prep time. Appliance manufacturers are responding by offering innovative solutions like wine dispensers and built-in coffee machines that rival professional baristas. Combining this with a secondary beverage or wine cooler and a dedicated ice maker ensures you’re prepared for any drink request, big or small. October is National Kitchen and Bath Month.
